ONLINE JOB SEARCH

The current job market present many challenges to those who are looking for employment. It is important to take steps that allow for a successful conclusion to your search. Now is not the time to tempt fate by taking any shortcuts. Avoid the following eight mistakes while searching for your next career path online.

THE EIGHT MISTAKES TO AVOID

1. Before you post your resume to an online employment site, review any other online groups that you are a member of. Social media is a part of your personal life, however, prospective employers may investigate online social activity. Your online presence is a reflection of you.

2. Do not post a resume that will be immediately deleted. Ensure that your resume is error free and presents a future employee that a company wants to secure as part of their team.

3. Signing up on a couple of popular employment sites and then sitting back to wait for the offers to come pouring in is not enough. Visit several sites and visit them often. It is important to check your email daily to ensure no missed opportunities. As an unemployed member of society your job is to find a job.

4. When you ignore the different online avenues available that bring you into contact with individuals that are hiring, you may miss a great opportunity. Become a member of employment social media sites and associations related to your career path. Personal connections are still very important and can lead you into the job of your dreams.

5. Never use the same resume for every job that you apply for. Take the time to make changes that reflect the position that is posted. Highlight the strengths you posses that complements the opportunity at hand.

6. Do not limit yourself to employment websites. Research companies who have opportunities that match your qualifications and visit the company website to track job openings.

7. Be cautious when approached by employment “head hunters” - they may require an investment that yields little return. Carefully research any offers to ensure that the organization is reputable.

8. Limiting yourself to an “online job search only” reduces the possibilities available to you. Make sure that your quest for employment involves multiple types of approach to the situation at hand.

ONLINE JOB SEARCH SUCCESS

Eliminate the potential areas that can result in failure, concentrate on producing a high quality product that represents all of the potential you posses and market yourself to every available avenue. No one knows you better than you - avoid the mistakes that can lead to disappointment and use every situation presented to bring your search to a successful conclusion.

Useful information, Shawn, especially these days. They're all good points but the two that stood out most to me were #5 & #7. When I've been applying for jobs I always made sure I tweaked the resume to highlight my skills areas that would be of most interest to the employer. And I've always been very leery of people who contact me with a "job offer" but I have to pay them the equivalent of two month's salary before they'll put my resume before their client. That just doesn't smell right to me. Thanks!
